Mayport

Mayport is a working fishing village at the mouth of the St. Johns River, its beach a quieter, more local counterpart to the bigger beach towns just south. Fresh Mayport shrimp, caught daily by the local fleet, shows up on nearly every menu in town, and the Mayport Ferry crosses the river right nearby for anyone continuing up the coast toward Little Talbot Island.
The working fishing village character and the fresh shrimp give it real local flavor beyond just the beach itself, though it's a plainer, less developed stretch of sand than the towns just south.

Time a visit around the ferry schedule if you're planning to continue on to Little Talbot Island or Amelia Island without backtracking through the city.
Public beach access parking is available near the village, generally free and less crowded than the bigger beach towns to the south.
Beach access from the village is a short, straightforward walk. The Mayport Ferry dock nearby is a separate, flat, easy area.
Check current signage for pets, as policies can differ from the incorporated beach towns just south and aren't uniformly documented for this stretch.
Spring and fall bring the mildest weather for exploring the village and the beach. Summer's warmer water and hurricane season, June through November, are the main things to plan around.
