Norton Point Beach
Edgartown, MA
Norton Point Beach is the Trustees of Reservations barrier beach that stretches east from Katama toward Chappaquiddick, with the Atlantic on one side and Katama Bay on the other. It is a long, exposed strip that is popular with surf anglers. The barrier has been repeatedly reshaped by breaches over the years, so the geography changes.
Long, wild, and much emptier than Katama, though permits, closures, and a moving barrier make it more work than a simple beach day.
How we score beachesCheck the Trustees website before you go. Breaches in the barrier and piping plover closures can change where you are allowed to walk or drive.
Access is free on foot, and driving on the sand requires an over-sand permit from the Trustees (reported at $90 for residents and $140 for non-residents).
This is a long soft-sand walk or a four wheel drive trip with a permit. There are no facilities.
Fishing runs strong in spring and fall, and summer is warm but exposed with strong Atlantic surf. Plover nesting closures can limit access in early summer.
