Ocean Grove Beach sits in front of one of the most distinctive towns on the Jersey Shore, a historic Methodist camp meeting community still built around tent platforms and the Great Auditorium a block back from the sand. The beach closes every Sunday morning until noon, a rule that traces straight back to the town's religious roots and one that catches first time visitors off guard every year.
A genuinely unique atmosphere that no other Jersey Shore town can copy, tents, the Great Auditorium, free parking, though the Sunday morning closure is a real scheduling headache for weekend visitors.
How we score beachesDon't plan a Sunday morning beach trip here. The closure from 8:30 to noon is strictly enforced, so come Sunday afternoon instead, when the beach reopens and tends to be less crowded than a typical weekend.
Parking is free, something residents have specifically fought to keep that way, though spots near the beach still go quickly on summer weekends.
A boardwalk runs along the beachfront with ramps down to the sand, flat and manageable for most visitors.
Dogs aren't allowed on the beach or boardwalk during the summer season, except service animals. Leashed dogs are welcome from mid September through mid May.
Water temperatures match the rest of this stretch of Monmouth County, climbing into the low to mid 70s by August. The town's Victorian architecture and tent community are worth the walk regardless of season.
