Pebble Beach
Marathon, ON, Canada
Pebble Beach is a 2 km stretch of Lake Superior shore in Marathon, Ontario, covered in smooth, rounded pebbles in every color, from leaf-sized to fist-sized. Huge driftwood logs lie along the top of the beach. Rockhounds come to hunt for agates and quartz, and everyone else comes to walk, skip stones, and watch the lake.
A colorful, unusual beach right in town, though it's all stones and hard on bare feet.
How we score beachesWear sturdy shoes. The stairs from the Howe Street lookout are steep and the pebbles shift underfoot.
A parking area and lookout above Howe Street in town.
A steep trail or staircase leads down to the pebbles; there's no level access to the water.
Summer is easiest for the stairs. After fall storms, freshly washed stones are the best for hunting agates.

New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
