Pebble Beach
Rockport, MA
Pebble Beach in Rockport is a crescent of water smoothed pebbles with rock ledges to explore at low tide. The stones clatter with every wave, which is a sound you will remember. It is better for beachcombing, bird watching, and tide pool wandering than for a towel and sunscreen day.
It is a peaceful, photogenic shoreline for walking and birding, though the pebbles and tight parking rule out a classic beach day.
How we score beachesGo around low tide when the pools open up, and wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. On a clear day the Boston skyline is visible across the water.
Parking is limited on Penzance Road, and posted restrictions apply, so check signs before you leave the car.
The shore is loose pebbles and rock, with no smooth path, so it is a hard trip for mobility devices.
Dogs are prohibited on Rockport's town beaches from June 1 to September 15.
Late summer and early fall offer calm, clear days for tide pooling. Winter storms throw surf up the pebble slope, worth watching from a safe distance.
