Pioneer County Park
Muskegon, MI
Pioneer County Park is a Muskegon County park with more than 2,000 feet of sandy Lake Michigan beach, reached by stairs from the bluff. There's a campground, a playground, picnic areas, and sports courts. It's a quieter option north of Muskegon.
A good beach with campground amenities, but the stairs can be a barrier.
How we score beachesStop at the scenic overlook decks before heading down the stairs; the view up and down the shore is worth the pause.
A lot at the park; check posted county fees.
Stairs lead down to the beach; not suitable for wheelchairs.
Campers fill the park from June through August. After Labor Day, you may have the beach to yourself.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
