Point Shirley Beach
Winthrop, MA
Point Shirley Beach is the southern end of the Yirrell shoreline, out on the tip of Winthrop's Point Shirley peninsula near Deer Island. It is a small sand beach reached from the adjacent Yirrell Beach, with the outer harbor and passing ships as the backdrop. Parking is limited to resident stickers.
A quiet end of the peninsula with real harbor views, but the resident parking rules and the walk in make it more of a bonus than a destination.
How we score beachesPark at Yirrell Beach if you can and walk south along the sand rather than hunting for a spot at the point. Time it for the last hour before sunset.
Parking near the point is by resident sticker, so non-residents should plan to use street parking on Shirley Street and walk. Check posted signs before leaving the car.
Reached by walking along the shoreline from Yirrell Beach, so plan on soft sand and some distance from the car.
The point catches wind from most directions, so it feels cooler than the inner harbor beaches. Late spring and early fall are pleasant for a long shoreline walk.
