Polihale State Park
Kekaha, HI

Polihale State Park sits at the end of the road on Kauai's west side, a wide, wild stretch of sand backed by dunes and the tallest sea cliffs in the state rising just up the coast. There's no reef here to calm things down, so the surf runs powerful and the beach stays genuinely remote even by Kauai standards.
The isolation and the scale of the place are unmatched on this side of the island, but there's no lifeguard, a dangerous shorebreak, and a road rough enough to keep the crowds genuinely thin.
How we score beachesDon't attempt the access road in a standard rental car. Every major rental company bans it, and getting stuck in the sand is common enough that locals treat it as a running joke about tourists.
After the paved highway ends, a rough, sandy road covers the last five miles to the park, best driven with four wheel drive and high clearance. There's no paved lot, just wide sandy pull offs near the beach.
Soft sand and dunes separate the parking areas from the water, a genuine walk that isn't manageable for strollers or wheelchairs.
Dogs are not permitted on the beach at Polihale, since it falls under the same statewide rule that bans pets on state park sand except for service animals.
Summer brings calmer water and easier driving on the access road, while winter's bigger surf and occasional heavy rain can make both the swimming and the drive out more difficult.
