Port Crescent State Park
Port Austin, MI
Port Crescent State Park, near the tip of the Thumb west of Port Austin, has three miles of undeveloped Lake Huron beach backed by open dunes and cedar forest. The slow Pinnebog River winds through the park and empties right onto the beach. It's also a designated dark sky preserve, with a viewing area for night skies.
Three miles of wild beach, a river to paddle, and dark skies, the one catch is a long drive to the tip of the Thumb.
How we score beachesRent or bring a kayak and paddle the Pinnebog River down to the lake. It's calm enough for beginners and ends at the beach.
A Michigan Recreation Passport (or nonresident pass) is required.
Boardwalks and short paths lead from the day-use lot to the sand.
Leashed dogs are allowed along the Lake Huron shoreline, except in the designated swim area at the campground.
The river is best for paddling in summer, when it runs slow and warm. Clear fall nights, after the campground empties, are prime for stargazing.

Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
