Salter Path Beach

Salter Path is a working fishing village tucked into the middle of Bogue Banks, where some families still bring their catch straight to the local fish house instead of a restaurant kitchen. The public beach access here stays quieter than Atlantic Beach or Emerald Isle on either side, even in the middle of summer.
A real fishing community feel that's mostly disappeared from the rest of Bogue Banks, though the tradeoff is fewer restaurants and a shorter list of things to do once you're off the sand.
How we score beachesAsk around the fish house markets about the day's catch. It's a genuine working waterfront, not a tourist reenactment, and locals are usually happy to talk about it.
The main public access, inside the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, has 75 free parking spaces along with showers, picnic tables, and restrooms. Smaller access points along NC-58 have only a handful of spaces each.
A short walkover crosses the dune at the main access. The smaller accesses are narrower sand paths.
Leashed dogs are welcome on Bogue Banks beaches year-round, per Carteret County rules.
Water reaches the upper 70s by August, right through the June through November hurricane season shared by the whole Crystal Coast. Fall brings some of the best surf fishing of the year, when the red drum run passes through.
