Sandy Beach (Peaks Island)
Portland, ME
Sandy Beach on Peaks Island is one of the few soft sand beaches in Casco Bay, on the southwest side of the island facing Whitehead Passage. A wooden walkway and steep ramp lead down to it. Most other island beaches are private, so this one draws islanders and day trippers from the Portland ferry.
A rare soft sand beach in Casco Bay reached by ferry, but the steep ramp and limited services make it a full day outing.
How we score beachesTake the ferry from Portland and walk or bike across the island. Bring water and food, since there are few services near the beach.
Reach it by ferry from Portland and then on foot or by bike. There is no parking at the beach.
A wooden walkway and steep ramp lead to the beach, so it is not accessible for wheelchairs.
