Sapelo Island
Darien, GA
Sapelo Island is Georgia's fourth largest barrier island, home to Hog Hammock, the last intact Gullah Geechee community on the state's coast, reachable only by a state-run passenger ferry that requires advance reservations. The beach itself is undeveloped, open to the public by Georgia law even though the island's interior is not.
A living Gullah Geechee community and a genuinely undeveloped beach make this one of the most singular destinations on the whole Georgia coast, though the reservation-only ferry means real advance planning.
How we score beachesBook the ferry through the Sapelo Island Visitors Center in advance. Same day walk-ons aren't guaranteed, especially in summer, and the crossing is only twenty minutes each way.

No paved paths on the island. The beach itself is open sand reached by unpaved roads and trails from the ferry dock.
Water reaches the low 80s by August, inside Atlantic hurricane season, June through November. Spring and fall bring milder weather for exploring beyond just the beach.
