Sarah Constant Beach Park
Norfolk, VA
Sarah Constant Beach Park sits between Norfolk's two other city beaches at 300 West Ocean View Avenue, named for one of the three ships that carried English settlers to Jamestown in 1607. A natural sandbar reaches about fifty yards out here, shallow enough that it turns the whole approach into a wide wading pool at low tide.
Quieter than its two neighboring beach parks with a real, distinctive sandbar, though the lack of ramps and walkways makes it the least accessible of Norfolk's three.
How we score beachesWait for a falling tide if wading with kids is the goal. The sandbar is most dramatic, and safest to stand on, once the water has dropped a bit.
A free public lot serves the park directly off Ocean View Avenue.
No access ramps or walkways here unlike its two neighboring beach parks, just a straightforward walk from the lot onto the sand.
The sandbar and calm bay water make this one of the more forgiving swim spots in the city through the summer, water in the mid to upper 70s by August same as the rest of Hampton Roads.
