Scusset Beach State Reservation
Sandwich, MA
Scusset Beach sits at the mouth of the Cape Cod Canal, where you get a bay beach on one side and a fishing pier on the other. Ships slide through the canal within sight. There is a state campground behind the dunes, and the sand stretches out toward the Sandwich town line.
A campground, fishing pier and wide beach make it a full day option, though the state parking fee adds up for casual visits.
How we score beachesThe fishing pier on the canal side is often busy with anglers at dawn. Walk to the far end of the beach if the near section feels crowded.
The state reservation charges a per vehicle parking fee, with a higher rate for out of state plates. The lot is large and rarely turns anyone away except on the busiest summer days.
Paved lots sit close to the beach, and the walk to the sand is short. Once you are on the beach, the sand is soft.
Summer brings the warmest bay water, usually peaking in August. Spring and fall are good for fishing, with cooler water and steadier wind.
