Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach runs eight miles along Lanai's windswept north shore, named for the rusting hull of a World War II era tanker still stuck on the reef offshore. The drive out from Lanai City takes about thirty minutes on paved road, then dirt, and ends with a short walk past petroglyphs at Kukui Point before the wreck comes into view.
The wreck and the petroglyphs make it one of the few genuinely memorable stops on the island, but the road keeps casual visitors away and nobody's swimming here regardless.
How we score beachesBudget an hour round trip beyond the drive itself. The wreck sits about half a mile down the beach from where the road ends, and the walk is over loose sand and rock, not a quick stroll from the car.
The paved highway ends at Lanai City's north edge, then a rough dirt and sand road continues to a small pull off area. Four wheel drive is required, and rental agreements on the island typically ban this road outright.
No paved path anywhere past the pull off. Getting to the wreck means walking over sand, loose rock, and low lava outcrops, not manageable for strollers or anyone with mobility limits.
Go in dry months, roughly April through November, since rain turns the access road to mud fast enough to strand a vehicle. The water here stays rough and unswimmable regardless of season, so this is a walking and photography beach any time of year.
