South Beach
South Haven, MI
South Beach is South Haven's busiest beach, a wide stretch of sand beside the south pier and its red lighthouse. It's steps from downtown shops and restaurants. On summer weekends the sand fills with families, beach volleyball, and people walking out to the light.
The lighthouse and downtown make it the quintessential South Haven beach, but crowds and hourly parking drag it down.
How we score beachesWalk the south pier to the red lighthouse at sunset, but stay off the pier when waves break over it; currents near piers are dangerous.
The city switched to hourly beach parking in 2026; weekly passes are also sold.
The lot is right behind the beach with a short walk onto the sand.
Dogs are not allowed on South Beach during the summer season.
July and August are peak. Offshore winds can suddenly flip Lake Michigan cold on this shore, so check the water before planning a full swim day.

Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
