Squibnocket Beach
Chilmark, MA
Squibnocket Beach is a rocky, rugged Atlantic beach at the far southwest corner of Chilmark, where the cobbles and boulders meet powerful surf. At high tide the sand nearly disappears. Sunsets here are a big draw, and the far view stretches toward Aquinnah's cliffs.
Dramatic scenery and a top sunset spot, though rocky footing, strong surf, and resident-only summer parking limit it.
How we score beachesCheck the tide chart before you go, because the beach is very thin at high tide. Low tide gives you the most room to walk.
A Chilmark sticker is required for parking before 5 PM in summer (reported at $65). Off season, the beach is open to all visitors.
The approach crosses rocky, uneven ground, so it is not suited to strollers or wheelchairs. There are no lifeguards.
Waves and currents can be strong, and it is more for walking than for swimming. Fall sunsets are especially vivid.
