Stony Beach
Falmouth, MA
Stony Beach is a small stony beach in Woods Hole village, owned by the Marine Biological Laboratory and staffed by Falmouth lifeguards and parking attendants. It sits within walking distance of the village center, so it is easy to combine with lunch and a walk past the harbor. The water is calm and the shore is, as the name says, stony.
A charming village beach with lifeguards, but the stony shore and tight parking keep it a modest stop.
How we score beachesWater shoes help on the stony bottom. Walk over from Woods Hole village rather than fighting for the small parking area.
Parking is limited and managed by attendants. Check Falmouth's current rules before you go.
Expect stones and pebbles underfoot rather than smooth sand; check on arrival for the path from the lot.
Summer water in Woods Hole tends to be cooler than elsewhere on the Sound thanks to strong tidal exchange. Fall visits are quiet and clear.
