Sunset Bay State Park Beach
Charleston, OR
Sunset Bay is a small, nearly enclosed cove protected by sandstone cliffs on both sides, which makes the water here calmer and noticeably warmer than the open coast just outside the bay's mouth. It's one of the few spots on the south coast where locals actually swim rather than just wade, and it connects by trail to Shore Acres and Cape Arago just south.
A real local institution for swimming specifically, since the enclosed bay is calmer and warmer than almost anywhere else on this coast, though it's small enough to feel crowded on a hot weekend.
How we score beachesThis is genuinely one of the warmer, calmer swimming spots on the entire Oregon coast, worth knowing if you're used to the cold, rough water everywhere else.
A day use fee applies at the main park lot; camping requires a separate reservation.
A paved path leads from the lot to the beach, with additional trail connections to Shore Acres and Cape Arago.
Leashed dogs are allowed throughout the park.
Summer, June through September, brings the calmest, warmest water in the bay, making it the best window for actual swimming.
