Temperance River State Park Beach
Schroeder, MN
Temperance River State Park Beach is a cobblestone beach where the Temperance River pours out of its narrow, twisting gorge into Lake Superior, between Schroeder and Tofte. The river got its name from early settlers, who noted that unlike other North Shore rivers, it had no sandbar, or 'bar', at its mouth. A one mile interpretive trail runs along the cobble shore.
A dramatic river gorge meets a cobble beach, though it's crowded near the bridge in summer.
How we score beachesWalk up the gorge trail from the highway to see the river churning through the slot canyon, then come back down to the beach.
A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required; there are pull-offs at the highway bridge.
Short paths lead from the lots to the cobble beach.
The gorge is most dramatic in spring snowmelt. Summer is busy with hikers.

New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
