The Strand Beach
Oxford, MD
Oxford's town beach, known simply as the Strand, runs along the Tred Avon River in one of the Eastern Shore's oldest towns, popular with families and dog owners who treat it as the default summer hangout. It's unguarded and low key, more a place locals already know than a beach that shows up on most visitors' lists.
A genuine small-town river beach locals actually use daily in summer, unguarded water and a lack of amenities beyond a shower keep it modest rather than a destination.
How we score beachesSkip a swim for a day or two after heavy rain. The county monitors water quality monthly and bacteria levels run highest in the 24 to 48 hours right after a storm.
A lot down Strand Street past the beach itself, with an outdoor shower and portable toilets on site.
A flat, short walk from the lot to the riverfront beach.
Dogs are welcome on the beach; no leash rules beyond general town ordinances are specified locally.
Water in the Tred Avon warms into the mid 70s by August. Fall brings quieter water and cooler evenings, still popular with locals walking the waterfront after work.
