Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach, NC

Family-friendlyUncrowdedPet-friendly

Topsail Beach sits at the quiet south end of Topsail Island, away from the bigger crowds at Surf City, and shares the island with the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center a few miles north. The pace here is slower, mostly cottages and a handful of shops instead of high-rises.

The slower pace and the turtle hospital give it a real identity apart from the rest of Topsail Island, though the trade is fewer restaurants and shops than Surf City up the road.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Stop at the sea turtle hospital on the way in or out. It's a real working rehab center, not a roadside attraction, and it explains why this stretch of beach takes nesting season so seriously.

Parking

Public accesses have free parking, generally small lots or a few roadside spaces near each walkover.

Accessibility

Wooden walkovers cross the dune at most accesses onto open sand. Several are narrow, built for foot traffic rather than beach gear carts.

Pets

Dogs are welcome on the beach on a leash up to 20 feet from May 15 through September 30. The rest of the year they're allowed off leash as long as they stay under voice command.

Weather & the best time to visit

Water reaches the upper 70s by August, alongside the June through November hurricane season typical of this coast. Sea turtle nesting season runs roughly May through October, adding another reason locals watch the dune line closely.
