Voulisma, also called Golden Beach, curves around the Gulf of Mirabello about 15 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos on Crete, Greece, backed by a rocky cliff thick with Mediterranean scrub. The turquoise water here is calm enough for kids and shallow enough that it warms up quickly through the summer, and it's fully set up with sunbeds and beach bars for anyone who wants to stay all day.

A genuinely beautiful, easy beach day with real facilities on hand, but its fame means it gets crowded fast in peak summer, and locals tend to seek out the quieter coves nearby instead.

Local Tip

Walk to the western end of the bay, or over to the small cove past the headland, if the main stretch feels too busy in peak season. Both are quieter and still close by.

Parking

There's a parking area right at the beach, easily reached from the coastal road near Istron village, about 15 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos.

Accessibility

Access from the parking area to the sand is flat and easy, with a fine sand and small stone mix underfoot that most visitors find comfortable to walk.

Weather & the best time to visit

June through September brings the warmest water and busiest crowds on this stretch of coast, while May and early October offer a calmer version of the same clear, turquoise conditions.
