Waianapanapa State Park

Waianapanapa State Park centers on Pailoa Beach, a small, dramatic cove of jet black volcanic sand framed by lava sea arches and blowholes. A short trail along the cliff edge connects the beach to a network of caves and a fresh water pool once said to run red, part of a local legend that draws as many hikers as swimmers.
One of the most dramatic, genuinely unique beaches in Hawaii, black sand and sea caves in one stop, though the reservation system for non residents has made it a plan ahead destination rather than a spontaneous one.

A short paved path leads from the lot to a viewing area above the black sand cove, with uneven lava rock and some stairs down to the beach itself.
Dogs are not permitted on the beach at Waianapanapa State Park, consistent with Hawaii state park rules that bar pets from state park beaches aside from service animals.
Currents and shorebreak can run strong here year round, with winter swells adding more risk. Check conditions before swimming regardless of season.
