Wasaga Beach Provincial Park
Wasaga Beach, ON, Canada
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park protects 14 km of sand on Georgian Bay in Ontario, the longest freshwater beach in the world. It's divided into eight numbered and named beach areas. Beach Areas 1 to 6 run along Mosley Street through the busy town strip, while Allenwood and New Wasaga, northeast of the Nottawasaga River mouth, are quieter and more natural.
The world's longest freshwater beach with a spot for every mood, though the main areas are crowded all summer.
How we score beachesIf Beach Areas 1 and 2 are packed, cross the river to Allenwood for the same sand with far fewer people.
Beach Areas 1 to 6 are reached off Mosley Street, and Allenwood and New Wasaga off River Road East; an Ontario Parks permit is required.
Paths lead from each beach area's parking to the sand; the bigger areas have larger washroom buildings.
July and August weekends are packed, especially around Beach Areas 1 and 2. The shallow water warms well by midsummer.
This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.

Sleeping Bear Dunes Beach
Empire, MI · Great Lakes
Freshwater Lake Michigan surf below towering sand dunes, some over 400 feet tall, with water clear enough to rival a coastline and a hike back up the dune to burn it off.
New Buffalo City Beach
New Buffalo, MI · Great Lakes
New Buffalo City Beach is the first real Lake Michigan beach you hit crossing from Indiana, a wide stretch of sand at the end of Whittaker Street beside the harbor and the Galien River channel. Chicago weekenders fill it in summer. The town's shops and restaurants are a five minute walk back up the street.
Warren Dunes State Park
Sawyer, MI · Great Lakes
Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer has roughly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and some of the tallest dunes in southwest Michigan. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the lake, and climbing it and running back down is a rite of passage. On a hot July Saturday the beach feels like a small city.
