Wells Beach
Wells, ME
Wells Beach is the main town beach in Wells, a long, flat stretch of sand that runs from the harbor jetty north toward Drakes Island. Low tide leaves a wide, firm strip that is easy to walk. Casino Square, the free lot at the middle of the beach, is the usual way in.
A big, easy beach with room to spread out, but summer parking is tight and little sets it apart from Ogunquit and Drakes Island next door.
How we score beachesWalk toward the jetty at the harbor end an hour before low tide and watch the boats go out. The sand near the jetty is also the quietest part of the beach on a busy weekend.
The Casino Square lot is the local go-to and fills by late morning on summer weekends. Check the town for current rules on other lots.
Flat sand a short walk from the lots, though the last stretch is soft. No boardwalk to the water.
July and August bring the warmest water, which is still brisk. September is the sweet spot, with clear air and far fewer people.
