Westhaven State Park
Westport, WA
Westhaven State Park sits on the South Jetty at the mouth of Grays Harbor, and it's the reason Westport calls itself Washington's Surf City. The break here is consistent enough that locals run dawn patrol sessions nearly year round, not just in summer, and the town's whole surf culture, lessons, rentals, shops, radiates out from this stretch of sand.
This is the beach locals build their week around, dawn patrol sessions and all, a defining identity for the whole town rather than just scenery, and the newly renovated bathrooms and showers are a real, if minor, upgrade.
How we score beachesRent a wetsuit before you paddle out even in summer. The water rarely gets warm enough here to skip one, no matter how good the waves look from the parking lot.
A Discover Pass is required for the parking lot, which sits right above the break.
A paved boardwalk connects to neighboring Westport Light State Park. The beach itself is open sand with a short walk down from the lot.
Surf is rideable nearly year round, with the most consistent swells in fall and winter. Summer brings smaller, friendlier waves better suited to beginners.
