Westport-Union Landing State Beach runs for miles along Highway 1 just north of Westport, a scenic, lightly developed stretch with a string of bluff top campsites overlooking the water. Pete's Beach, reached by stairs at the south end of one of the pullouts, is a quieter pocket of sand within the same park.

The bluff top camping with an ocean view is a genuine draw, though the limited facilities mean it rewards people who come prepared rather than expecting much on site.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Pick a campsite here for the view over the amenities, the sites are basic but the bluff top position over the water is hard to match at this price.

Parking

A day use fee applies; the exact amount is best confirmed at the entrance station.

Accessibility

Stairs, a path, and a boardwalk lead from the bluff top parking down to the beach, depending on the pullout.

Pets

Dogs are allowed on the beach on a leash no longer than six feet, and can camp with owners for a small nightly pet fee.

Weather & the best time to visit

Summer mornings run foggy before clearing by afternoon, typical of the Mendocino coast, with water staying cold year round.
