Winchuck State Recreation Site
Brookings, OR
Winchuck sits at the mouth of the Winchuck River, the last beach access in Oregon before the California border a couple of miles south. It's a quiet spot popular with local anglers working the river mouth for salmon and steelhead as much as anyone looking for open beach, and it sees very little of the tourist traffic that Brookings' bigger beaches get.
A real local fishing spot more than a beach destination, solid for that purpose, but with little draw for anyone just looking for open sand.
How we score beachesFall brings salmon runs up the Winchuck River, and locals fish the mouth here specifically for that run rather than treating it as a swimming beach.
Free lot directly off Highway 101.
A flat, sandy path leads from the lot to the beach and river mouth.
Fall, roughly September through November, brings the salmon and steelhead runs that draw most of the regular visitors here.
