Winthrop Beach
Winthrop, MA
Winthrop Beach runs along Winthrop Shore Drive on the town's ocean side, a long crescent of sand that was rebuilt with imported sand and now has a wide, walkable strip at low tide. State managed, it looks straight out at the outer Boston Harbor islands and the planes lining up for Logan.
Real sand and a proper promenade five miles from downtown Boston make it a dependable local beach, but weekend parking is tight and the water never gets truly warm.
How we score beachesWalk the seawall promenade at low tide and the beach doubles in width. Weekday mornings are calm even in July, while the strip near the pavilion fills first on weekends.
Street parking runs along Winthrop Shore Drive and fills early on hot weekends. Check current signage for time limits and any seasonal rules.
A paved promenade runs the length of the seawall with ramps and stairs down to the sand. The sand itself is soft near the wall and firmer near the waterline.
July and August bring the warmest water, though Massachusetts Bay stays brisk compared to the Cape. Spring and fall are quiet, with a steady onshore breeze.
