The Best Time of Day to Beat the Crowds at the Beach

Crowds at a beach follow a fairly predictable daily rhythm, and it's one of the few variables you have real control over without changing where you go.

Early morning — roughly sunrise to 9am — is consistently the quietest window at almost any beach, popular or not. The light is better for photos, the sand is cooler, and on beaches with tidepools, low tides often cluster around early morning or evening depending on the coast, which is worth checking before you go if that's part of the draw.

The crowd curve climbs through late morning and peaks in the early-to-mid afternoon, roughly 11am to 3pm, which is also usually the hottest and most crowded parking window. If you're set on visiting during that stretch, arriving right as it opens up beats arriving in the middle of it by a wide margin.

Late afternoon into evening is the other quiet window, and on west-facing beaches it comes with a sunset. Families with young kids tend to leave by mid-afternoon, which noticeably thins out beaches that were packed a few hours earlier.

Weekday versus weekend matters more than almost anything else on this list. The same beach that requires a parking strategy on Saturday is often close to empty on a Tuesday — worth remembering if your schedule has any flexibility at all.
