Bunche Beach Preserve sits on San Carlos Bay across from Sanibel Island, a soft mudflat and mangrove edge beach that draws birders and kayakers more than swimmers. Herons, ibis, and the occasional roseate spoonbill work the shallows at low tide, and manatees are a regular sight in the calm bay water.
The birding and manatee sightings here are genuinely good, rare for a beach this close to Sanibel's crowds, though the soft mudflat sand and lack of a real swim beach means it rewards patience over a typical beach day.

A short boardwalk overlooks Rock Creek near the kayak launch, though some walkovers and restrooms are still being repaired after hurricane damage. The beach itself is soft mudflat sand, harder going underfoot than a typical Gulf beach.
Pets aren't allowed anywhere in the preserve, a stricter rule than most nearby beaches given its role as a protected birding habitat.
Winter brings the best birding as migratory species pass through, along with the mildest weather. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, still leave the bay calm enough for wading and kayaking most days.
