Calanque d'En Vau

Calanque d'En Vau is the most dramatic of the coves inside the Calanques National Park near Cassis, France, a narrow inlet of turquoise water framed by sheer white limestone cliffs, reached by a roughly two hour hike each way from the Cassis harbor. It's widely considered the standout of the park's calanques, which is exactly why the trail can feel busy despite the effort required to get there.
One of the most stunning coves on the entire French coast, worth the two hour hike each way, though summer wildfire closures mean it's worth checking access before committing to the trip.
Check the official fire risk map the evening before you go, since access to the massif is restricted or closed some summer days based on conditions, and the map updates around 6pm for the next day.
Parking near the trailheads outside Cassis fills early in summer. Most visitors start the roughly two hour hike from the harbor area rather than trying to drive closer.
The trail is a long, uneven hike over rocky terrain with some steep sections, not suitable for strollers, limited mobility, or anyone without proper hiking shoes.
June through September brings the warm, dry Provencal summer and the highest wildfire risk, which is when access restrictions are most likely. Spring and fall offer cooler hiking conditions with fewer closure risks.
