Deer Lake State Park protects one of 30A's rare coastal dune lakes, a globally uncommon ecosystem where fresh water periodically connects to the Gulf through a shifting outfall in the dunes. A boardwalk crosses the sensitive dune habitat to reach the beach itself, keeping foot traffic off the fragile plant life.
A genuine rare coastal dune lake ecosystem sets it apart from any typical 30A beach stop, though the no pets on the beach rule and sunset closing are real limits on how the park can be used.
How we score beachesPets are welcome on the nature trail and picnic area across Highway 30A from the entrance, but not on the boardwalk or beach itself, plan accordingly if traveling with a dog. The park closes at sunset, so don't plan a trip around watching it from inside the gates.
Parking is 3 dollars per vehicle.

Leashed dogs are welcome on the nature trail and picnic area but not on the boardwalk or beach.
Spring and fall bring the mildest Panhandle weather and thinner crowds. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, bring the biggest crowds despite the warmest water.
