Deer Lake State Park protects one of Walton County's rare coastal dune lakes, an ecosystem found in only a few places on Earth. A quarter mile boardwalk crosses the dune field from the 30A parking lot to the Gulf, with two covered rest stops along the way. The lake itself sits just off the boardwalk, often ringed with wading birds.
The dune lake and the quiet boardwalk make it feel bigger than its size, though the small lot means locals plan around the 30A traffic to get there.
How we score beachesThe dropbox at the entrance only takes cash, so bring exact change if you don't have an annual pass. Go early, the small lot on 30A fills fast once the summer crowds arrive from the busier parks nearby.

The boardwalk is flat and ADA accessible the entire quarter mile from the lot to the beach, with two shaded stops along the way. Sand starts right where the boardwalk ends.
Leashed dogs are welcome in the picnic area and on the nature trail across 30A from the entrance, but they aren't allowed on the boardwalk or the beach itself.
Spring and fall keep the boardwalk walk comfortable and the small lot from filling, while summer brings the warmest Gulf water and the thickest 30A traffic. Hurricane season runs June through November same as the rest of the Panhandle.
