Fort Anahuac Park

Fort Anahuac Park sits on the spot where the first shot of the Texas Revolution was fired, a 40 acre county park on Trinity Bay with a lighted pier, a splash pad, and swimming areas alongside the boat ramps and campsites. It's as much a history stop as a beach day, with markers around the grounds explaining the fort's role before visitors ever reach the water.
A real local favorite for the history and the birding as much as the water, though it's a bay swim without waves, more of a family picnic spot than a beach destination.
How we score beachesPair the swim with the short walk to the historical markers near the entrance. Most visitors come for the water and don't realize the site's history until they're already there.
A paved lot is free at the park entrance on South Main Street.
The park is ADA compliant with paved paths connecting the swimming areas, pavilions, and playground.
Leashed dogs are allowed.
Summer draws the most swimmers, while spring and fall are better for the birdwatching the marshes here are known for. Hurricane season runs June through November, and this low lying bayfront can see early impacts.
