Horseshoe Beach is a small fishing village at the end of the road in Dixie County, its Butler-Douglas Memorial Park shoreline rocky and oyster strewn rather than sandy. It's better understood as a boat launch and fishing outpost that happens to sit on the Gulf than a swim beach, popular with anglers more than sunbathers.
It's a genuine slice of old Gulf Coast fishing village life, but the rocky, oyster strewn shoreline and lack of any real swimming area mean it's a niche stop for anglers rather than a beach day destination.
How we score beachesCome for the fishing and the boat ramp rather than expecting a sandy swim beach, there's no designated swimming area here. The drive out along County Road 351 through the Nature Coast's marshland is its own reward if you're not in a hurry.
Parking is free with about 25 spots at the park, no entrance fee.
The park has a boat ramp and a short, flat walk to the rocky shoreline, not a sandy beach walk. Uneven oyster shell ground makes bare feet a bad idea here.
Pets aren't allowed at Butler-Douglas Memorial Park, the main public access point.
Cooler months bring the best fishing and the mildest conditions for a walk along the shoreline. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, are the main things to plan around on Florida's Nature Coast.
