Jamaica Beach
Jamaica Beach, TX
On Galveston Island's quieter west end, well past the Seawall crowds near downtown, Jamaica Beach is mostly a residential town built around its own stretch of sand. Public Beach Access 17, off Buccaneer Drive near the Jamaica Beach Food Store, lets you drive and park right on the sand. It's the kind of beach where you bring your own chairs and don't expect much else.
Easy drive-on access and distance from the Seawall crowds make it a solid choice for a quiet afternoon, but the lack of lifeguards or restrooms keeps it from being anyone's go-to for a full day out.
How we score beachesGo early on weekends, since the firm sand near the water gets churned up fast once enough trucks are parked on it. There's no lifeguard and no restroom out here, so plan around that before you settle in for the day.
Parking is free, and you can drive right onto the sand at Beach Access 17 off Buccaneer Drive. There's no fee and no time limit, just a first come, first served stretch of beach.
It's drive-on sand with no boardwalk, stairs, or paved walkway, so getting from the road to the water is as easy or as soft underfoot as wherever you park. There's no restroom or lifeguard stand nearby.
Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and owners must pick up after their pets.
Summer here means Gulf water in the low 80s and hurricane season running all the way to the end of November, so a lot of locals actually prefer the calmer, cooler stretch from October through April. Watch the tropics if you're planning anything for August or September.
