Kisatchie Bayou Beach
Provencal, LA
Kisatchie Bayou Recreation Area sits deep inside Kisatchie National Forest, where a clear, blackwater bayou runs over a genuine white sand bottom and shoreline instead of the mud most Louisiana waterways carry. It's reached by forest roads rather than a highway, and the walk-in campground around it keeps the crowd small even in summer. This is closer to a wild swimming hole than a managed beach.
About as close to untouched as a Louisiana swimming spot gets, with real white sand and clear water, though the remote forest road access and lack of any facilities keep it from being an easy trip.
How we score beachesThere's no drinking water at the campground or the beach, so bring everything you'll need for the day. Cell service is spotty at best this deep into the forest.
A small gravel lot serves the recreation area off the forest road. It's rarely full, but the road in requires a little more care than a paved highway.
A short walk from the lot to the sand, uneven forest ground rather than a paved path, with a few of the walk-in campsites right along the water.
Central Louisiana's swim season runs roughly May through September. Rain upstream can raise the bayou and bring Class II rapids through the area, so it's worth checking recent weather before counting on calm, wadeable water.
