Little Florida Beach
Johnson Bayou, LA
Also known locally as Oceanview Beach, Little Florida sits along the Peveto Woods chenier in the Johnson Bayou community, near the Texas line. The sanctuary next door pulls in birders every spring and fall migration, and a fair number of them wander down to the sand afterward. It's soft, quiet, and rarely has more than a couple of cars parked along the road.
A genuinely peaceful spot that pairs well with the bird sanctuary next door, though it's a long, empty drive out here with nothing in the way of facilities once you arrive.
How we score beachesCome during spring migration, late March into April, and combine a walk through Peveto Woods with the beach. The sanctuary trail entrance is a short drive up the highway.
Roadside parking off LA 82 only, no dedicated lot. There's rarely competition for space.
Flat sand from the road to the waterline, no boardwalk or paved path, and soft enough in spots to slow down a stroller.
Spring and fall bring the bird migrations that draw the sanctuary crowd, with mild temperatures on either side of the area's hot, humid summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, same as the rest of the Cameron Parish coast.
