Marco Island splits its public beach access between Tigertail Beach, with its shallow lagoon and sandbar that make it a favorite for families and shorebirds alike, and South Beach at the island's south end, closer to the high rise hotels. Both feel worlds apart from Keewaydin Island just across the pass, reachable only by boat and one of the only spots in the area where dogs are actually welcome.
Tigertail's lagoon and sandbar give it more variety than a typical beach day, though the daily parking fee and no pets policy on the main island are real tradeoffs compared to nearby Keewaydin.
How we score beachesRent a kayak or paddleboard at Tigertail to reach the sandbar and back lagoon, it's calmer water than the open Gulf side and better for spotting wading birds. South Beach tends to have easier parking than Tigertail on busy days, worth checking both before circling for a spot.
Both Tigertail and South Beach charge around 8 to 10 dollars a day at pay stations, or an hourly rate near 1.50 dollars. A 12 month pass runs about 50 dollars, worth it for frequent visitors.
Both main beach lots have paved paths leading onto the sand, flat and manageable. Tigertail's lagoon and sandbar require wading through shallow water at low tide to reach the outer sandbar.
Dogs aren't allowed on Marco Island's beaches, with the one exception of Keewaydin Island, reachable only by boat.
Winter and spring bring Southwest Florida's driest, mildest weather and the biggest crowds. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, thin things out some despite the warmest water of the year.
