Matagorda Bay Nature Park

Matagorda Bay Nature Park sits at the mouth of the Colorado River in Matagorda, a 1,600 acre LCRA run preserve with its own Gulf front beach separate from the general Matagorda Beach access down the road. A granite jetty, kayak rentals, and a nine hole mini golf course round out a spot that's as much a preserve as a beach.
The combination of a real beach, a preserve, and genuine camping infrastructure make it a standout on this stretch of coast, though it's more of a planned trip than a spontaneous one given the drive in.
How we score beachesThe birding here is serious, over 370 species recorded, so bring binoculars even if swimming is the main plan. The marsh trails on the bay side are worth the extra hour.
Day use parking is free. Overnight camping runs fifteen to forty dollars a night depending on the site.
A developed path leads from the park facilities to the Gulf front beach, more built out than most Matagorda County beach access.
Dogs are welcome, though the grass burrs outside the camping area can be rough on paws.
Spring and fall bring the best birding as migration passes through, while summer is the draw for the beach itself, water in the low 80s. Hurricane season runs June through November.
