McFaddin Beach

McFaddin Beach sits inside McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County, a long stretch of undeveloped Gulf sand backed by one of the largest freshwater marshes left on the Texas coast. There's no lifeguard and no concession stand, just sand, surf, and whatever birds are working the shoreline that day. It's free to enter and open daily during daylight hours.
A real find for anyone who wants an empty beach and doesn't mind the total lack of facilities, but the remoteness and zero amenities keep it from being anyone's everyday spot.
How we score beachesFill up on gas and ice in Sabine Pass first, there's nothing out here once you're past the refuge gate. Primitive camping right on the beach is allowed, which locals use as a workaround for the more crowded state park sites five minutes away at Sea Rim.
Parking is along the beach itself past the refuge entrance, free, with no permit required. There's no paved lot, so a vehicle that can handle soft sand makes the day easier.
Access is a walk or drive straight onto the sand from the refuge road, no boardwalk or paved path. Restrooms sit near the main entrance kiosk, a distance from most of the beach itself.
Fall through spring brings the mildest weather and the best birding, since the refuge sits on a major flyway. Summer is hot and humid with hurricane season running June through November, worth checking refuge conditions before a trip during those months.
