Okaloosa Day Use Area

The Okaloosa Day Use Area is Gulf Islands National Seashore's stretch of Santa Rosa Island near Fort Walton Beach, shorter and calmer than the seashore's bigger units farther west. It backs onto Choctawhatchee Bay on the north side instead of open Gulf, so there's a sheltered bay beach a short walk from the main Gulf side lot.
The bay side option when the Gulf gets choppy is a genuine advantage over neighboring beaches, but it's a smaller, less scenic stretch than the seashore's bigger Panhandle units.
How we score beachesUse the boardwalk crossover near the middle of the lot to reach the bay side if wind has the Gulf side too choppy for swimming, it's calmer there most afternoons. The gate closes at sunset and rangers do clear the lot, so don't plan on staying past dark.
The seven day Gulf Islands National Seashore pass applies here too, in the 20 to 25 dollar range per vehicle, with a smaller day use lot than Fort Pickens or the Santa Rosa Area. It's open 8am to sunset only, no overnight parking.
A paved lot leads to a boardwalk over the dune line, with soft sand for the last stretch down to the Gulf. The bay side path is shorter and mostly flat.
Pets aren't permitted on the beach here, the same rule as most of Gulf Islands National Seashore outside the Fort Pickens area.
Tucked between Destin and Fort Walton Beach, the water here follows the same warm Panhandle pattern, swimmable from spring through fall and calmest in the bay during summer's afternoon Gulf chop. Winter visits are quiet, with far fewer people than the beaches just down the road in Destin.
