Packery Channel
Corpus Christi, TX
Packery Channel splits into two distinct beaches on either side of the jetty separating Mustang Island from North Padre Island, with the north side known locally as J.P. Luby for its consistent surf and the south side favored for overnight beach camping and calmer water. A paved lot and sidewalk lead straight to the channel from Zahn Road, an easier approach than most surf spots on the island.
The most consistent surf break in Corpus Christi on one side and a real camping beach on the other make this a genuine local anchor point, though the holiday dog ban and permit system take some getting used to.
How we score beachesBoth sides close to dogs on major holidays, so check the calendar before bringing one along on a busy weekend.
A paved lot off Zahn Road serves the north side, with beach driving and a twelve dollar annual parking permit required for most of the stretch.
A sidewalk connects the paved lot to the beach on the north side. The south side is reached by driving directly onto the sand.
Leashed dogs are allowed except on major holidays, when both sides are off limits.
Wind and swell pick up in spring, the better window for surfing, while summer is busiest for camping on the south side. Hurricane season runs June through November.
This isn't one entrance, it's a stretch with a few. Here's where locals actually meet up.
