Palacios Bay Beach
Palacios, TX
Palacios Bay Beach runs along Bay Boulevard on the back side of Matagorda Bay, a man made stretch of sand the town built specifically because the water here stays shallow and calm, a deliberate contrast to the open Gulf beaches an hour away. Families set up near the pavilion, and the water is gentle enough that it barely registers as a wave.
A genuinely useful, calm water option for families with small kids, though it's a small, built beach rather than a real stretch of coastline, so it doesn't hold a full day the way a bigger beach does.
How we score beachesThis is the pick over a Gulf beach specifically for small kids. The shallow, protected water here is forgiving in a way the open coast just isn't.
Parking is free along Bay Boulevard, with additional space near the pavilion.
ADA ramps connect the walks and plazas to the beach, with a wetland exhibit boardwalk nearby.
Leashed dogs are allowed.
Summer brings the calmest, warmest water for young swimmers, while the shallow bay can turn choppy with a strong north wind in winter. Hurricane season runs June through November.
