Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park

Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park is Hernando County's only public beach, a modest 3 acre stretch of white sand shaded by palm trees on the Gulf side of the Nature Coast. A birding hotspot with more than 160 recorded species, it's as much a spot for watching wildlife as it is for swimming.
Being the only real public beach in the entire county makes it a genuine local institution, though its small three acre size means it can feel crowded fast relative to its modest amenities.
How we score beachesGrab one of the first-come pavilions early if a group outing is the plan, they go fast on weekends given there's only one beach in the whole county. The observation point is worth the short walk even if birding isn't usually your thing, given how many species pass through here.
The entrance fee is 5 dollars, with a paid lot near the park entrance.
The beach is easily reached from the parking lot on a short, flat path. Pavilions, grills, and a playground are all close to the main beach area.
Pets aren't allowed anywhere in the park except service animals, following county parks ordinance.
Spring and fall bring the mildest weather for this small Nature Coast beach. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, are the main things to plan around.
