Poverty Point Reservoir State Park Beach

Delhi, LA

Family-friendlyHistoricScenic

Poverty Point Reservoir State Park's beach sits at the North Marina complex near Delhi, a large stretch of sand for a Louisiana lake beach, backed by a 2,700 acre reservoir built for recreation. It takes its name from the nearby Poverty Point archaeological site, one of the most significant prehistoric earthwork complexes in North America. Between the beach, the marina, and the water playground, it's the area's main summer gathering spot.

One of the largest and best equipped lake beaches in the state, paired with a genuinely significant historic site nearby, but it's a rural stretch of northeast Louisiana that few visit without a specific reason to be in the area.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Combine the beach with a stop at the Poverty Point World Heritage Site nearby. It's an easy pairing and gives the trip a reason to exist beyond the swim.

Parking

The North Marina lot off Louisiana Highway 17 serves the beach directly, with a per person entry fee collected during gate hours.

Accessibility

A flat, short walk from the marina parking area to the sand, with a water playground nearby for younger kids.

Pets

Louisiana State Parks policy keeps dogs off designated swimming beaches even on leash, though leashed pets are welcome elsewhere in the park.

Weather & the best time to visit

Northeast Louisiana's swim season runs roughly May through September, with hot, humid summers typical of the Delta and cooler winters than the coast ever sees. Weekday visits avoid the heaviest boat and jet ski traffic on the reservoir.
