Riviera Beach, known locally as Ghajn Tuffieha, sits below tall cliffs on Malta's west coast just south of the more crowded Golden Bay, its amber sand and clear shallow water often cited as the prettiest on the main island. Around 180 steps are the only way down, which keeps the crowd noticeably thinner than at its neighbor despite the short distance between them.
One of Malta's most genuinely beautiful beaches, with real snorkeling in the sheltered bay, though the 180 step climb back up is a real cost that keeps some locals choosing an easier beach instead.
Come early if you want a spot without the crowd, since the beach fills up by mid morning even with the steps keeping some visitors away. The climb back up is the real deterrent for most.
There's parking at the clifftop near the top of the stairway, and buses from Sliema and Valletta also stop nearby for anyone without a car.
The only way down is a stairway of roughly 180 steps, which rules out strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who isn't comfortable with a sustained climb back up.
June through September brings Malta's warm, calm swimming season, with the clearest water for snorkeling around the rocks that enclose the bay typically later in that window.
