Rosamond Johnson Beach sits on the federally protected east end of Perdido Key, the developed section of Gulf Islands National Seashore reachable only from the Florida side of the key. Two bathhouses and a pair of picnic pavilions are the only structures allowed on this stretch, keeping four miles of dune and open Gulf sand free of the condos that line the rest of the key.

Four miles of protected dune and sand without a single building in sight is rare this far west on the Panhandle, though no pets on the beach and a gate fee in the twenty dollar range are the tradeoffs for it staying this undeveloped.

How we score beaches
Local Tip

Get there before 9am on weekends, the small lot at the west pavilion fills first and there's nowhere to wait it out nearby. Pack in anything you'll want for the day, there's no food or drink sold anywhere on this stretch of the key.

Parking

A Gulf Islands National Seashore vehicle pass runs in the 20 to 25 dollar range at the gate and is good for seven days, covering Fort Pickens and the Santa Rosa Area too if you visit those later in the week. Walkers and cyclists pay a lower flat rate at the same gate.

Accessibility

Paved ramps lead from both parking lots to the bathhouses and pavilions, with soft sand beyond that point down to the water. There's no boardwalk over the dunes here, so the last stretch to the shoreline is a walk through loose sand.

Pets

Pets aren't permitted on the beach itself, one of the few Gulf Islands National Seashore areas without a leash exception, though they're fine on a leash in the parking areas.

Weather & the best time to visit

Gulf water off Perdido Key stays swimmable from April through October, warmest by August, with hurricane season running the same June through November stretch as the rest of the Panhandle. Winter brings the fewest crowds and coolest water, dipping into the upper 50s some years.
